Forest schools have a deep history stemming from the original creation of kindergartens in the early 1800s. Kindergarten, in German, translates to “children’s garden”. The original kindergartens were preschool aged, in gardens or outdoors, and play-based. In the 1950s and 60s the Germans reclaimed kindergartens and labeled them Forest Kindergartens or Waldkindergarten. In 2006, the first Forest Kindergarten or Forest School was established in America, Cedarsong Nature School in Vashon Island, WA.
